- 2024-Q2Apr 5, 2024
Jabil Quarterly Report for Q2 Ended Feb 29, 2024
Jabil Inc. (JBL) reported results for the second quarter of fiscal 2024 (three months ended February 29, 2024). Net revenue was $6.77 billion, down from $8.13 billion in the prior-year quarter, and the filing attributes the decline to lower EMS revenue from 5G, wireless and cloud customers, along with the divestiture of the mobility business. Operating income rose to $1.13 billion from $359 million, driven mainly by a $944 million pre-tax gain from the December 29, 2023 sale of the Chengdu product manufacturing business (mobility). Net income attributable to Jabil was $927 million, or $7.31 per diluted share, compared with $207 million, or $1.52 per diluted share, a year earlier. Core operating income (non-GAAP) was $338 million versus $391 million, and diluted core EPS was $1.68 versus $1.88. On the balance sheet, cash and cash equivalents increased to $2.57 billion, total assets fell to $17.12 billion, and notes payable and long-term debt was $2.88 billion. Six-month operating cash flow was $666 million, and adjusted free cash flow (non-GAAP) was $221 million. The company repurchased $1.3 billion of common stock year to date, with $1.2 billion remaining under its amended 2023 Share Repurchase Program. The company also launched a 2024 Restructuring Plan expected to total approximately $300 million in pre-tax charges during fiscal 2024. For investors, the key tensions are a shrinking top line and thinner core margins against a one-time gain that inflated reported GAAP earnings, alongside heavy capital return. The filing also notes that five largest customers accounted for approximately 39% of six-month net revenue, a concentration risk that remains relevant going forward.
- 2024-Q1Jan 9, 2024
Jabil Quarterly Report for Q1 Ended Nov 30, 2023
Jabil Inc. reported net revenue of $8.39 billion for the three months ended November 30, 2023, down from $9.64 billion a year earlier, a decrease the filing states as 12.9%. The filing attributes the decline mainly to the EMS segment, where revenue fell 21%, driven by lower 5G, wireless and cloud revenue as that business moved to a customer-controlled consignment model, along with declines in digital print and retail and in industrial and semi-capital equipment. The DMS segment's revenue fell 6%. Gross profit rose to $775 million from $743 million, and gross margin widened to 9.2% from 7.7%, which the filing attributes to product mix, improved profitability across various businesses, and no longer recording depreciation on assets held for sale. Operating income declined to $303 million from $362 million because restructuring, severance and related charges rose to $127 million from $45 million. Net income attributable to Jabil was $194 million, or $1.47 per diluted share, compared with $223 million, or $1.61 per diluted share. Non-GAAP diluted core earnings per share were $2.60, versus $2.31. Cash flow and capital returns were stronger. Net cash provided by operating activities was $448 million, versus $166 million, and adjusted free cash flow was $173 million, versus $2 million. Cash and cash equivalents were $1.55 billion at quarter end, and notes payable and long-term debt totaled $2.88 billion. The company completed a $500 million accelerated share repurchase in the first quarter of fiscal 2024 and has $2.0 billion remaining under its 2023 Share Repurchase Program. Its 2024 Restructuring Plan is expected to cost approximately $300 million in pre-tax charges over fiscal 2024, with about $200 million in net cash expenditures payable over fiscal 2024 and 2025. The filing also reports the sale of the mobility business to an affiliate of BYD Electronic (International) for approximately $2.2 billion in cash, which closed on December 29, 2023, after the quarter ended. Assets and liabilities of the business were classified as held for sale at quarter end. The five largest customers accounted for approximately 44% of net revenue during the quarter.

- 2020-Q2Apr 1, 2020
Jabil Quarterly Report for Q2 Ended Feb 29, 2020
Jabil Inc. (JBL) reported its second quarter of fiscal 2020 (three months ended February 29, 2020) with net revenue of $6.13 billion, roughly flat versus $6.07 billion a year earlier, while net loss attributable to Jabil Inc. was $3.3 million, or $(0.02) per diluted share, compared with net income of $67.4 million, or $0.43 per diluted share, in the prior-year quarter. Gross profit fell to $430.1 million from $454.9 million, and operating income declined to $90.6 million from $154.0 million. Management attributes the margin pressure largely to COVID-19: the company incurred approximately $53.0 million in direct costs in the quarter, mainly incremental and idle labor costs from factory utilization reductions in China, and the filing states the outbreak will have a material adverse impact on financial condition and results of operations. Restructuring and related charges rose to $29.6 million in the quarter and $74.9 million for the six months, tied to the 2020 Restructuring Plan, which the company expects to cost approximately $85.0 million. Total notes payable and long-term debt rose to $2.72 billion, reflecting the issuance of $500.0 million of 3.600% Senior Notes due 2030 and a new $2.7 billion revolving credit facility plus a $300.0 million term loan entered January 22, 2020. Management states that it is in compliance with its debt covenants and expects its liquidity sources to be adequate for the next 12 months, while noting that COVID-19 may complicate renewal of receivables sale programs and refinancing of the 5.625% Senior Notes maturing December 15, 2020. For investors, the key points are the sharp drop in quarterly profitability, the operational disruption tied to COVID-19 in China and the company's explicit warning of a material adverse impact, and the heavier reliance on debt and receivables sale programs to fund working capital and operations. Five largest customers accounted for approximately 47% of net revenue in the six-month period.

Jabil Inc. filed this Form 10-Q for the first quarter of fiscal 2019, ended November 30, 2018. Net revenue rose to $6.51 billion from $5.59 billion a year earlier, and operating income increased to $216.7 million from $145.8 million. Net income attributable to Jabil Inc. was $123.6 million, or $0.76 per diluted share, compared with $63.8 million, or $0.35 per diluted share, in the prior-year quarter. The filing attributes the higher earnings in part to a $13.3 million income tax benefit tied to the Tax Act, and notes that prior-year SG&A included $32.4 million of stock-based compensation from award modifications. Gross profit as a percent of net revenue declined to 8.0% from 8.4%, which the filing attributes to higher capital equipment business costs and ramp costs on new EMS awards. Cash flow and working capital shifted notably this quarter. Net cash used in operating activities was $91.7 million, driven by higher contract assets and accounts receivable, which the filing links to the adoption of ASU 2014-09 and to amended and new securitization programs. Cash and cash equivalents fell to $804.4 million from $1.26 billion at August 31, 2018. Total notes payable and long-term debt was $2.51 billion, and the company reported $2.3 billion of unused revolving credit capacity. The company repurchased 7.9 million shares for $204.5 million under its 2018 program, leaving $145.5 million available. The filing also discloses that Jabil adopted the new revenue standard (ASU 2014-09) effective September 1, 2018, which shifts recognition for most contracts to over time and reduced retained earnings at adoption by $42.6 million, net of tax. On December 12, 2018, the company announced that its binding offer to form a strategic collaboration with Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices Companies was accepted, subject to regulatory clearance and closing conditions, with completion expected in fiscal 2019 and 2020.
