KeyCorp Financial Overview 2021–2025

Updated Nov 4, 2026

KeyCorp went from a $304 million loss in FY2024 to $1.69 billiona of net income for common shareholders in FY2025. The 2024 hole came from a $1.8 billion securities repositioning loss, so the swing says more about a one-time cleanup than about broken earnings. The thesis is simple: the repositioning worked, and a recovering net interest margin is now carrying the results.

The long arc is a round trip. Net interest margin was 2.50% in FY2021, sank to 2.16% in FY2024, and recovered to 2.69% in FY2025. Diluted EPS tells the other half of the story: $2.63b in FY2021 versus $1.53 in FY2025. Earnings have not yet returned to their starting point. In FY2025, net interest income climbed $861 million to $4.67 billion, and noninterest income reached $2.84 billion from $809 million a year earlier. Total assets barely moved, at $184.4 billion against $186.3 billion in FY2021, so the gain came from better spreads, not a bigger balance sheet.

Credit stayed steady. Net charge-offs ran 41 basis points, and nonperforming loans fell to $615 millionc from $758 million. The Common Equity Tier 1 ratio sat at 11.78%, and buybacks restarted with $200 million repurchased in Q4 2025 under a $1.0 billion program. The stock closed at $20.64 on the last trading day of FY2025, or 13.6x earnings.

Recent Developments (Q1 and Q2 2026)

KeyCorp posted Q2 2026 diluted EPS of $0.44d, flat from Q1 2026 and up from $0.35 a year earlier. Net interest margin reached 2.89%, and net interest income (TE) hit $1.26 billion. Management raised its 2026 outlook and authorized a new $3.0 billion buyback in May 2026. Moody's upgraded the issuer rating to Baa1 on July 15, 2026. The Clearwater UK acquisition closed in August 2026. Nonperforming assets rose to $818 million from $692 million in Q1 2026, and noninterest expense grew 5.5%.

Bull case: margin expansion toward 3.25%, loan growth of $110.4 billione, and buybacks of $341 million support earnings. Bear case: rising problem assets and a CET1 ratio down to 11.17% leave less cushion. The stock traded at 15.1x earnings as of the Q2 2026 filing date of August 3, 2026, not today.

What to watch: nonperforming asset trends after the Q2 2026 rise; expense growth against the raised revenue outlook
