Symbotic Financial Overview 2021–2025

Updated Nov 4, 2026

Symbotic swung from -$102.5 milliona of free cash flow in FY2024 to +$787.9 million in FY2025. That matters because the company still lost $91.0 million on a GAAP basis. The thesis: Symbotic is a customer-funded automation machine, and the cash is arriving well ahead of the profits. Operating cash flow of $866.9 million leaned heavily on a $606.4 million jump in deferred revenue, which means Walmart's prepayments, not earnings, paid for the year.

The longer arc is steep. Revenue grew from $251.9 million in FY2021 to $2.25 billionb in FY2025, including 26% growth in the latest year. Gross margin widened from 14% to 19% over FY2024 to FY2025, and Adjusted EBITDA rose from $61.7 million to $147.5 million. Cash reached $1.24 billion. Backlog sits near $22.5 billion, with about 12% expected to convert to revenue in FY2026. The momentum continued into Q3 2026, when revenue hit $720.8 million and operating income reached $32.9 million, against an operating loss a year earlier.

The risks are just as concrete. Walmart supplied roughly 85% of FY2025 revenue. A material weakness in cost-of-revenue timing persists, and FY2024 quarters were restated. At the close of FY2025, shares traded at $52.14c, a $30.8 billion market cap, or roughly 14x annual revenue. With EPS of -$0.16, no earnings multiple applies. Investors were paying for backlog conversion and cash generation, not current profit.

Recent Developments (Q2 and Q3 2026)

Margins improved in Q3 2026. Gross margin reached 22.3%, versus 18.9% a year earlier. Net income was $55.0 milliond, but that included a $19.4 million fair value gain on strategic investments. Cash flow reversed: free cash flow was -$164.6 million as receivables rose and deferred revenue fell, and cash slipped to $1.75 billion from $2.0 billion in Q2 2026. On October 28, 2026, Walmart made a new commitment of about $6.0 billion, which could add up to $6.92 billion to backlog. It also committed $125 million to next-generation racking development.

The bull case: guidance calls for Q4 2026 revenue of $760 million to $780 millione, and the new commitment extends visibility. The bear case: Walmart was 90.5% of Q3 2026 revenue, the deal lets Walmart terminate on certain change-of-control events, and the stock's $24.1 billion market cap at $40.82 (as of August 4, 2026) rests on negative EPS of -$0.16, so no P/E applies.

What to watch: cash flow recovery after the Q3 2026 reversal; conversion of the new Walmart commitment into backlog

Recent SEC Filings

  1. 8-KSymbotic 8-K Report, Material Agreement (Oct 29, 2026)On October 29, 2026, Symbotic Inc., Symbotic LLC and Walmart Inc. entered into an Enterprise Master Automation Agreement (the "Commercial Agreement") that establishes a global framework governing Symbotic automation systems and technology provided to Walmart and its affiliates. Walmart has made a new commitment to purchase Symbotic systems and fund development programs representing an initial aggregate additional spend of approximately $6,000,000,000 over a number of years across multiple locations. Symbotic expects this Initial Commitment could increase its future backlog by up to $6,920,000,000. The commitment is made up of market program addenda covering ambient-area distribution and fulfillment centers in the United States and select international markets in the Americas, plus a development program addendum under which Walmart committed $125,000,000 to fund next-generation racking and related technology. The Initial Commitment is in addition to purchase commitments under the existing Second Amended and Restated Master Automation Agreement (May 23, 2022) and Master Automation Agreement (January 27, 2025). The agreement also grants Walmart governance rights for so long as it owns more than 5% of Symbotic's fully diluted equity: a right to recommend one independent director candidate to the nominating and corporate governance committee or Board chairperson, and, when Walmart represents more than 50% of consolidated revenue in any trailing four-quarter period, the right to designate two non-voting board observers. The agreement restricts Symbotic from selling or licensing products to a specified company and its affiliates, and it can be terminated for insolvency, uncured material breach, or, by Walmart, certain change of control transactions. It also specifies a calculation for amounts due to Symbotic if Walmart buys fewer systems than committed. Symbotic issued a press release on the same day announcing the agreement, which describes an expansion across 25 U.S. regional distribution centers and an initial commitment of approximately $6 billion.
